22.02.06 - Court of Appeal Dismisses Libel Claim with Costs
In Mar 04, nine SCF members - Steven Tan Chor Chuan, Roger Yap Swee Chee, Lawrence Ee Boon Peng, Mark Ong Chong Ghee,
Rolles Rudolf Jurgen August, Kenny Chern Seng Pau, Allan Yung Yew Kong, Nelly Menon (Rolles), and Tan Lian Seng brought
a libel action against 11 members of the 2003-2005 SCF Executive Council (EXCO) alleging that certain statements published
by the EXCO in an appeal addressed to members on 2 Jan 04 in response to a requisition the nine had submitted on 30 Dec 03
for an extraordinary general meeting were defamatory.
The case was heard before Justice Andrew Ang in Jan 05. On 18 May 05, Justice Andrew Ang dismissed the action and
subsequently on 28 Sep 05, issued his Grounds of Decision (GD). Justice Andrew Ang found that while the requisitionists
were entitled to requisition an EOGM under the SCF's constitution, however if in the exercise of that right, they put up
items in the requisition which unfairly suggested wrongdoing on the part of the EXCO, it cannot be that EXCO could not
defend themselves by putting up a suitable rebuttal within the bounds set by law. Justice Andrew Ang found that the
plaintiffs were indeed mischievous and selectively inaccurate in putting up various items in the 30 Dec 03 requisition.
As such Justice Andrew Ang found that the EXCO had justified the libel.
8 of the 9 members subsequently appealed Justice Andrew Ang's decision with the exception of Mark Ong Chong Ghee who accepted
the learned Judge's findings and did not proceed with the appeal process. The appeal was heard on 21 Feb 06 in the Singapore
Court of Appeal comprising Chief Justice Yong Pung How, Justice of Appeal Chao Hick Tin and Justice Belinda Ang Saw Ean.
The Court of Appeal unanimously affirmed Justice Andrew Ang's findings and dismissed the appeal with costs. The EXCO has
recovered a substantial portion of the costs of the trial from the plaintiffs and will now proceed to recover costs of the
Appeal from them as well.
The EXCO wishes to sincerely thank all chess members who have stood by them throughout the entire two year legal process.
The support - both moral and tangible - is fully appreciated. Thank you."

05.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 8
Standard Round 8 - Men
Goh Wei Ming played a Reti Opening. He made a mistake that led to passivity. His black-squared bishop
could not find an influential role to play. The position was never in danger of erupting badly. It was
later calculated that this game guaranteed Wei Ming his first IM norm. Congratulations to Wei Ming.
DRAW v Dinh Duc Troung VIE
Wu Shaobin was observably tired before the game. He played a few quick moves only. Then he went off to
focus his attention on preparing for the final round. DRAW v Halay INA
Meng Kong played a Scandinavian Defence and came up with a new plan. He delayed castling and obtained
a comfortable position. He sacrificed the exchange to stir up complications. With pawns and R+B he was
able to create enough threats to force his opponent onto the defensive. There were few opportunities to
force a winning position, though he may have missed one possible line. DRAW v Mok MAS
Jason played the Slav Defence and adopted an aggressive plan. The centre was vulnerable as he proceeded
to attack on the kingside. His opponent responded on the queenside. Then Jason miscalculated –
the mistake brought about a lost position. LOSS v Nguyen Anh Dung
Standard Round 8 - Women
Suzanna and Liu Yang played a brief game and settled for equality. DRAW
Jeslin played demonstratively. She quickly gained the upper hand. By sensible manoeuvring she gained
a material advantage and nursed it comfortably through the ending. Her R + 4p were far too strong for
her opponent’s B + 2p. A well played game. WIN v Salvador PHI
Dawn recovered her composure well and played defiantly. After losing on time in the earlier round she
quickly created a winning position in which her pieces dominated the centre of the board at the cost
of a mere pawn. A quick mate did not happen but instead she forged a winning B+4 p v N+2p advantage.
WIN v Win Win Thwe.

04.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 7
Standard Round 7 - Men
Goh Wei Ming played a significant game. Singapore were in contention with Malaysia and Indonesia for
the bronze medal. Any head to head game took on greater importance. To begin with Chan appeared to
have a lead in development but any advantage was illusory. Wei Ming consolidated and at one stage
was a pawn to the good. Unfortunately he was unable to push home his advantage. DRAW v Chan N. MAS
Wu Shaobin played the early part of the game with his usual finesse. He seized the open d-file with
his rooks and looked to increase his advantage. His blitz opponent stirred up some complications and
started to attack. LOSS v Damakiling PHI
Meng Kong played a solid opening but his subsequent position seemed to be deteriorating against his
younger opponent. Meng Kong summoned his experience and gradually pulled himself back into the game.
A satisfying escape – and a sigh of relief. DRAW v Halay INA
Jason played against the Grunfeld and quickly established a strong central passed pawn and tactical
threats. Black missed an interesting opportunity to counterattack against Jason’s king and after that
it was all one way traffic. WIN v Zaw MYA
Standard Round 7 - Women
Jeslin had regained much of her composure after a tough opening to the tournament. She looked strong
in the centre and gained a small space advantage. Black’s king looked a little exposed on f7. As it
turned out there was no way to force a happy conclusion. DRAW v Tin Lay Shwe MYA
Liu Yang played a sharp theoretical line of the Meran. Her opponent handled the task well and
stablilised position – there was only a small disadvantage. Then Black managed to neutralize even
that advantage. DRAW v Dian Cheri INA
Suzanna’s opponent played d4 Nf3 Bf4 – avoiding a sharp position. Suzanna’s position deteriorated
and she could have lost piece. Like many games in the tournament the contest was decided by a
blunder. WIN v Marmono MAS
Dawn played an excellent game, but one which ended in controversial manner. She started sharply by
pushing g5 in the Scandinavian and generating dangerous attacking chances after twenty moves.
With an open g-file and marauding bishop and queen, she seemed poised for victory. Tragedy struck
as she missed a mate in three – one that was not at all obvious – it would have made a fine finish
to the game. The chance was lost and her opponent countered. Then came a big surprise. Dawn played
her move – pushing her king out of check. White captured a rook and within seconds Dawn responded
by taking a bishop on h2. Almost instantaneously White indicated that Dawn had lost on time.
Something was wrong as the incremental system should have added 30 seconds to Dawn’s clock.
The scoresheets were signed by the players. Had the clock been set incorrectly?
Was it already faulty? A huge disappointment for everyone. LOSS v Thandar MYA.

04.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 6
Standard Round 6 - Men
Goh Wei Ming created a sacrificial attack as Black. He had a fine open diagonal, a passed pawn and a
well-posted knight but was it enough. As the time pressure increased it became obvious to Ashot
Nadanian that Wei Ming had a number of available options. The win was assured with time to spare.
WIN v Wong ZJ MAS
Wu Shaobin was confronted by one the young lions from Vietnam. Playing a Slav Defence he was equal
after the opening. A middle game mistake, however, cost him the game. He lost immediately after the
error to a nice combination. LOSS v Le Quang Liem VIE
Meng Kong’s game featured an interesting endgame. He had R+P v B+2P. Significantly the pawns were
connected and well-advanced, so it took much care (on both sides) to gain a decisive advantage.
Looking very cool under time pressure Meng Kong probed and side-stepped, but ultimately had to
settle for sharing the point. DRAW v Lim Yee Weng
Jason was material ahead fairly early but the position was still unclear. In a Sicilian, white
had sacrificed two pieces for the initiative. Jason defended well and may have had chances to secure
an advantage. After a number of exchanges the players arrived in a tricky ending R+B v R – and
agreed a draw. DRAW v Tirto
Standard Round 6 - Women
Jeslin was working hard to revive her spirits and the team score. She created chances during the
opening and middle game, although she missed some opportunities to secure a winning advantage.
As the game simplified, Jeslin moved into an even rook and pawn ending. DRAW v Myat MYA
Dawn played a very interesting game. In a MacCutcheon, she disturbed Black’s kingside and created
a passed pawn on the h-file. With R+B each, the game was delicately poised. Dawn created two passed
pawns but they could not be easily mobilized. On the queenside there were four dangerous pawns.
Dawn decided to fight by exchanging pieces – by something of a fluke the configuration worked
in Black’s favour. LOSS v Marmono MAS
Suzanna recorded a confident win. She followed Sicilian theory and played a thematic bishop
sacrifice on e6 which ripped open the position. Her opponent may not have played the defence with
great accuracy, but in reality she was not allowed to. A fine attacking win in 22 moves.
WIN v Win Win Thwe MYA
Liu Yang played a Scandinavian and achieved a fairly balanced position. Yang took control of a
central file with her rooks. The ensuing position did not provide winning chances.

03.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 5
Standard Round 5 - Men
Goh Wei Ming appeared to be gaining the upper hand – happily playing quite aggressively. His opponent
responded and found ways to make life difficult. Ultimately the material dwindled so much that there
was only going to be one result. DRAW v Dableo R (PHI)
Wu Shaobin played against the Benko Gambit. He later regretted the omission of a preparatory move
that would have established an advantage. He created enough counterplay on the king side – with
the aid of a knight sacrifice – to force a draw. DRAW v Wong Zi Jing (MAS)
Meng Kong worked hard throughout the session against his young opponent. However, he miscalculated
and the position became critical. The imbalance was too acute to survive. LOSS v Le Quang Liem (VIE)
Jason was involved in a complex battle where the material forces became unbalanced – a dynamic
contest ensued. Possibly there were chances to force home an advantage but the Indonesian battled
hard and forced an equal ending. DRAW v Handoko E (INA)
Standard Round 5 - Women
Jeslin demonstrated great composure. Clearly determined that her previous results would not have a
negative effect, she took the game to her opponent. Defending against the Catalan she was able to
attack on the kingside. It proved difficult to force critical weaknesses and as the game entered
the endgame any winning chances dissolved. DRAW v Marmono R (MAS)
Dawn found herself at a disadvantage early on being restricted in her movements on the kingside.
Her opponent planted a bishop on f6 blocking the advance of the f-pawn. Ultimately material was
lost and with it the game. LOSS v Tran TKL (VIE)
Suzanna followed her preparation well and entered a complex position. She chose to capture a pawn
but it only permitted her opponent to develop her pieces and stir up some complications. She fought
hard and created chances to equalize but a slip late on allowed White to capitalize fully.
LOSS v Salvador A (PHI)
Liu Yang did not find the correct opening line but was able to create a position of relative
strength that was defensible. Black had an active position particularly along the queen-side files.
Liu Yang fought hard to negate the advantage and was rewarded for her efforts with a half point.

02.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 4
Standard Round 4 - Men
Goh Wei Ming would not have been happy with his opening. Playing against the Larsen he found himself
in a passive position. His opponent applied steady pressure and squeezed Wei Ming. Perhaps with more
time he could have saved the ending. LOSS v Torre (PHI)
Wu Shaobin played the Caro-Kann but tried to initiate counterplay too quickly. He had to nurse a bad
position during the middle game but he was unable to hold it. LOSS v Nguyen Anh Dung (VIE)
Meng Kong also played the Caro-Kann against an old rival. He was prepared for a long battle. However,
in a quicker game than Wu’s he found an interesting tactical blow that forced a perpetual check.
DRAW v Handoko (INA)
Jason played the Meran variation of the Slav. He made a mistake in the middle game but was resourceful
in his response. He exploited a slip by his opponent and made his way into an endgame.
DRAW v Le Quang Liem (VIE)
Standard Round 4 - Women
Jeslin was determined to play a strong game. In the early middle game she appeared to be well placed
with pressure on backward pawns. Unfortunately she tried for too much. Late in the game her position
became critical as she overcommitted on the king-side. LOSS v Win (MYA)
Dawn played with composure. She achieved a small but effective advantage. When her opponent tried to
counter along the centre files she saw further and neatly simplified to an endgame with a pawn advantage.
Her technique was sound as she made use of tempo gain to queen her R pawn. WIN v Myat (MYA)
Suzanna found it difficult to select a workable plan. In attempting to trap and win a bishop she
miscalculated and had to play on in a difficult position. She was unableto find a way out.
LOSS v Hoang (VIE)
Liu Yang played steadily throughout with the black pieces. At one stage – with many pieces exchanged –
she created sufficient counterplay with king and knight to guarantee a draw against king and bishop.
DRAW v Lomibao (PHI)

02.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 3
Standard Round 3 - Men
Goh Wei Ming played a sharp attacking variation. His opponent – last year’s silver medalist – was the
victim of good preparation. A neat sacrificial attack ended matters quickly. WIN v Megaranto (INA)
Wu Shaobin was on top board. He calculated carefully but made a slight slip and found himself in a slightly
awkward bishop ending. Careful defence reaped its just rewards. DRAW v Torre (PHI)
Meng Kong found himself in an interesting but dangerous rook and pawn ending. In order to save time he created
a solid position and then made quick moves with his rook along the third rank. Neatly he forced a perpetual.
DRAW v Tirto (INA)
Jason was forced to defend against an advanced passed pawn and material down. Defiantly he fought to hold back
his opponent but in end he had to concede. LOSS v Dimakiling (PHI)
Standard Round 2 - Women
Jeslin had problems in the opening that she was unable to solve. But to her credit she fought on to test her
opponent’s technique. LOSS v Tranh Thi Kin Loan (VIE)
Dawn played well to gain a slight advantage. She missed a chance to establish her rook on the seventh but kept
the upper hand. The position was simplified in to a 2R+B v 2R+N ending, but then a pawn was lost.
LOSS v Dian Sheri Stefani (INA)
Suzanna played against a well-prepared opponent in a Modern Defence. She fought hard but went down in a rook
and knight ending. LOSS v Nguyen Thi Thanh An Tu (VIE)
Liu Yang played a Queen’s Gambit Accepted. Her opponent seemed to maintain a slight edge throughout, but it
was not enough to create a serious imbalance. DRAW v Tamin Upi Darmayana (INA)

01.12.05 - 23rd SEA Games 2005 - Standard Round 2
Standard Round 2 - Men
Goh Wei Ming played well to defeat his opponent. In a Slav Defence he found the answer to a novelty by
his opponent. Gradually he outplayed his younger Vietnamese rival. WIN v Le Quang Liem (VIE)
Wu Shaobin looked composed throughout in a Caro-Kann – playing with his usual focused approach he was
never in any real danger. From an unclear position he capitalized on a mistake to create a strong centre
– he won a piece and then the game. WIN v Tirto (INA)
Meng Kong equalised easily in the opening and gradually exchanged pieces against his highly fancied
opponent. The game was draw in the end game. DRAW v Nguen Anh Dung (VIE)
Jason in the Sicilian he had some problems emerging at one stage a pawn down. He managed to fight back
and created sufficient counterplay to create problems for his opponent. Ultimately there was a short
discussion but Jason successfully claimed a draw by three fold repetition. DRAW v Wong Zi Jing (MAS)
Standard Round 2 - Women
Jeslin managed to obtain a good position in the Queens Gambit. As the game proceeded she adopted a
safety-first approach and became somewhat passive. Unable to find a way to break through in the middle
game she emerged in the ending with 2R+B v Q+B. A tactical mistake lost the exchange and then the game.
LOSS v Tamin (INA)
Dawn played the Marshall Gambit but found herself in a slightly inferior line. She was unable to challenge
on the kingside with any strength and then made a tactical error. LOSS v Tin Lay Shwe (MYA)
Suzanna played the Sozin variation in the Sicilian. She obtained a better position and cautiously manoeuvred
to neutralize her powerful and higher rated opponent. There was not enough in the position to bring victory.
DRAW v Le Thanh Tu (VIE)
Liu Yang obtained a superior position –Czech Benoni/Old Indian type of position. As the game moved forward
the advantage gradually evaporated. Her Philippine opponent eased out of trouble. In what was still a tenable
position Yang blundered into mate. LOSS v Mendoza (PHI)
