One year ago, Singapore made chess history.

In November 2024, the World Chess Championship came to our shores for the first time — a landmark moment for both the sport and the region.

The match between Ding Liren and Gukesh Dommaraju unfolded at Resorts World Sentosa across 14 intense classical games. Gukesh emerged victorious in the final round, becoming the youngest undisputed World Chess Champion in history.

But the event was more than just a championship. Singapore broke new ground with bold moves: no broadcast delay, mobile phones allowed in the hall, and a modern experience designed for a global audience.

In June 2025, the event was named Best Sports Event of the Year — a fitting recognition for an unforgettable moment in chess.

Thank you for joining us at the June Holiday Intensive Chess Course!

Over the past month, we were thrilled to welcome enthusiastic players of all levels to five days of focused training, friendly competition, and a shared love for the game.

A heartfelt thank you to our coaches and parents for your unwavering support — and to our young players for your energy, discipline, and passion. We hope you left inspired, more confident, and even more in love with chess.

We extend our congratulations to Chin An on being awarded Best Sports Photograph of the Year, showcased in the first image.

His exceptional photograph captured a defining moment of the World Chess Championship, reflecting the intensity of the sport and its emotion. Chin An helped capture many of the most defining moments of the event. This recognition is a well-deserved testament to his skill and dedication.

The FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 has been awarded

The Singapore Chess Federation had hoped that by bringing this event to Singapore, we could inspire our local chess athletes and bring the game to our thriving chess community. This is a dream outcome for all of us here at the SCF.

Local photographer Eng Chin An also won Best Sports Photo of the Year with his creative photograph, using the reflection of the glass wall to capture a unique moment during the #dinggukesh match.

Chess @ Central started as a pilot project in Dece

Chess @ Central started as a pilot project in December 2023, since then we've continued to partner with CDC Central to bring about more chess training in more locations.

Demand has been strong with classes packed each session, we believe in the power of chess to bring people together and are happy to see so many young minds shining!

Ms Alexandra Obolentseva

SCF National Chess Coach

Woman Grandmaster

Alexandra is an excellent player of the game of chess, holding the title of Woman Grandmaster. She has also obtained 3 International Master norms since 2018. Alexandra has many achievements in the world of chess. She was the gold medalist for the Youth World Championship G10 in 2011, and won the silver medal for the Youth World Championship G18 in 2016 and in 2018, and a bronze medal in 2019. Alexandra has also represented Russia in the World Youth U16 Chess Olympiad, winning the silver medal in 2016, and the gold medal in 2017. Another impressive accomplishment she has made was winning gold with SC Bad Königshofen in the 2018/2019 and 2019/2021 editions of Frauen-Bundesliga. In May of 2023, Alexandra clinched the gold medal, together with the Moscow Chess Team, in the Russian Women’s Team Championship.
